When Things Feel Scattered by Leo Babauta

It can feel overwhelming when there are a lot of things happening at once and in turn, it can lead to you feeling stressed and scatterbrained. You may sometimes feel like you aren’t in control or you’re drowning under the pressure, but here are some helpful tips and practices that can help you feel in control.

Make a List

It can be as simple as writing down a list of tasks. Writing everything down and getting everything out of your head can get you to visualize your responsibilities. Then take the time to sort each item on the list into priorities. That way, you can see small tasks that you would be able to finish quicker than others. If you find your list being too long, it may help to break it down and prioritize it to 3-5 tasks that you’d want to tackle that day.

Delegate Time for Each Task

Allocating your time to complete each task can be very helpful for certain areas of your life that needs attention. How much time will you need for meal prepping? Doing homework? Working out? Running errands? Creating a structure around your weekdays can help get things in order, one task at a time.

Focusing on One Task at a Time

One of the reasons why you may be feeling scattered is because you’re trying to complete various tasks at once. Try taking it slow and putting your entire attention on one task at a time. Doing one task at a time can help retain information more efficiently, work more creatively, find more meaning in work, and get more work done in less time

Take Breaks

You should always take small breaks during the day where you can take better care of yourself. Oftentimes, people pay less attention to what they’re eating because they’re focused on their work and that can lead to poor physical health. Use this time to refuel yourself and take a lunch break away from your work space. By doing so, you will be able to reduce the feeling of stress, burnout, and improve your overall emotional and physical health.
